Here are a few of my favorite suggestions to have on hand for the “newborn mother” after birth:

  • Sitz bath mix: I often create a blend for my clients that has epsom salts, comfrey leaf, lavender flowers, plantain leaf, red raspberry leaf and yarrow flower.
  • Sitz bath basin: To set inside your toilet to soak your tender parts.
  • Witch hazel pads (for hemorrhoids): Just soak little cotton face cleaning pads in witch hazel and keep them in a little jar, preferably in the fridge.
  • Perineum squirt bottle: For rinsing your tender parts while going pee!
  • Coconut oil or nipple cream: to apply between breastfeeding moments.
  • Nursing bras or stretchy sports bras.
  • Washable or disposable breast pads: for leaking nipples.
  • Cotton underwear.
  • Washable or disposable overnight pads (You can soak them in your sitz bath mix and put them in the freezer to make a little froze pad for your perineum!)
  • A couple adult sized diapers for the day of the birth and the day after.
  • Belly wrap or Rebozo: to do a postpartum belly wrap.
  • Pain killers: Tylenol or Advil
  • Magic sack (hot/ cold pack) to use for sore & achy muscles
  • Healing teas: raspberry leaf, nettle and oat straw are great for postpartum
  • Dates and prunes: to keep your bowels moving
  • Cabbage leaves: to put on your breast when they are full or engorged
    on day 3-5.

  • Lots of freezer food & snacks!!
  • If you can afford it, get HELP! Booking a postpartum doula to help nourish your new family can be such a blessing. A house cleaner is another possibility. A couple sessions with an osteopath for both mother and baby is often a necessity!
